Luftbild Stadt Arnis - von 65 Familien aus dem benachbarten Kappeln gegründet, | Die Stadt wurde 1667 von 65 Familien aus dem benachbarten Kappeln gegründet, die sich weigerten, Leibeigene des Gutsherrn Detlef von Rumohr zu werden. Wirtschaftlich blühte Arnis im 19. Jahrhundert als Fischer- und Schifferort, mit über 1.000 Einwohnern und 88 Handelsschiffen. Der Ort erhielt 1866 den Status eines Fleckens und wurde am 1. Januar 1934 im Zuge der kommunalen Gleichschaltung unter den Nationalsozialisten zur Stadt erhoben.
